This is a monologue from the series “The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh," for which I was auditioning for the role of Kamal Pradeep. For this piece, I learned the script with the help of an acting coach from LB Acting Studio, examining his character, who likes to follow rules, and trying to gain an understanding of his discomfort at having to move abroad. In the first section, I maintained an “Indian” accent and somber persona – talking about the ways in which Kamal notices the act of migration. In the second section, I delve deeper into what happens to one’s identity when one is uprooted. One of my key takeaways from this experience was that to get into character, one has to almost meditate and imagine each trait the character possesses – thus, this was an extremely helpful exercise in understanding the nuances of identity, expression, and displacement.
